Women Build

What is Women Build?

Since 1991, Women Build volunteers from all walks of life have come together to build stronger, safer communities. Our Women Build events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving their communities.

Women Build opportunities are available across the U.S., and any woman who wants to learn how to build and construct a home is invited to join us. No experience is necessary. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals, and also alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved, and improves the community that you share.

Women Build is also a terrific way to involve your friends and family of all ages and genders in crucial work with a lasting impact. Women helping women sends a positive and powerful message. Our goal with Women Build is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence. We at Habitat have the ability to provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and given these tools, women can succeed in changing their communities.

How does the program work?

The first step is to sign-up: to join a team, or to form your own team. Each team is  made up of 10-12 builders and has the opportunity to work on a variety of Habitat projects under the supervision of one of our Construction Managers. No experience necessary to join a team.

Women Build is all about encouraging others to join the program, making new friends, and building confidence by working together as a construction team. Every hand is needed to help Habitat home buyers realize their dream of owning a home. We also hope  each team will help raise funds to help support our building costs, as well as spreading the word about the Habitat mission.

Every team is scheduled for their own build day, but are encouraged to schedule more. Build days are Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 am – 4 pm. Safety instructions relative to each task will be given at the beginning of each day, so make sure you arrive on time.

We’re currently building Phase 1 of the Telegraph Townhomes Project, the first 8 units of what will become a 52-unit complex. We’re also building a single-family home in Sudden Valley. We have build days weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. (Bring plenty of food and water, dress appropriately, no open-toed shoes please, and to please ask if you have questions.) Check out our past projects, including Lowe’s Women Build Day.

All genders and ages are welcome to join Women Build teams.
