AARP Repair Program
Thanks to a grant from AARP, Habitat Whatcom has some funding available to help with accessibility and aging-in-place related repairs for low-income homeowners over the age of 50 in Sumas, Everson, Nooksack, Maple Falls, and Kendall.
We have several exterior accessibility packages available for this grant, though other repairs, such as fall prevention and other modifications or additions may be considered.
Funding assistance from the AARP grant will be applied to those who qualify based on need. Even if you aren’t sure if you qualify, we recommend applying. Any repair project costs that are not covered by the grant funding will be structured as an affordable 0% interest loan carried by Habitat.
The deadline to apply for a repair through this program is August 31st, 2025.
The following Aging-in-Place accessibility packages are base estimates only, assuming no additional repairs or modifications are required to complete the work. If structural issues, code upgrades, or site-specific modifications are necessary to accomplish the proposed tasks, the total cost may increase accordingly.
Handrail & Step Safety Package –$1,800
Includes:
- Install or repair one full-length exterior handrail (treated wood)
- Reinforce 3–4 steps (replace treads or risers if rotted)
- Apply non-slip tread strips or paint
Modular Ramp Installation Package –$1,920
Includes:
- Install modular aluminum or pressure-treated wood ramp (4–6 ft section)
- Install edge rails for safety
- Compact site grading/prep if needed
Note: Costs can go higher for longer ramps, but this fits short entry ramps
Grab Bars + Entry Modifications Package –$1,440
Includes:
- 2–3 heavy-duty exterior grab bars (near door, on posts)
- Replace door threshold with low or no-lip version
- Widen clearances if needed (non-structural)
- Replace knob with lever handle
Porch & Stair Rehab Package –$2,040
Includes:
- Replace/repair porch treads and stair stringers (small porch only)
- Install handrail on both sides
- Apply anti-slip coating
- Add reflective tape or contrast color nosing
Entry Visibility & Trip Hazard Package –$1,560
Includes:
- Trim/clear bushes or roots blocking path
- Install 2 solar path lights
- Add handrail or grab bar near steps
