Community innovation between Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County is creating an interlocking network of public and private leaders, all sharing a new vision for creating affordable housing in our community.

Our model combines key aspects of Habitat and the Land trust models to build housing on a new scale for small cities and rural areas. Habitat relies mostly on private giving, has a low cost of entry into home ownership, provides below-market financing, all of which promotes housing security. The Land Trust model is a proven method of promoting permanent affordability while limiting land speculation.

Foundations today are moving beyond one-off grants to find new partnerships where they can make direct “impact” investments in social enterprises that achieve both measurable charitable objectives, as well as investing in projects that support reasonable financial returns.

These new partnerships are directly helping working families in Whatcom County today, through Habitat for Humanity. Click the button below to meet some of our community partners.
